Joseph
Leander Wescott
Joseph Wescott was a "mountain
man". He was said to be the first white man to settle in Grand
Lake, Colorado. He was carried in on a litter by Indians. He was
very ill, but regained his health in Colorado, making his living
by hunting, trapping, and fishing. He refused to talk about his
former life, and he never married.
Joseph was born about 1835, probably
in Nova Scotia, Canada. He died 27 September 1912, (some say 1913
or 1914, but the cemetery record says 1912). He was buried in Riverside
Cemetery, Marshalltown, Iowa.
